UNDERSTANDING THE INGREDIENTS OF THE LOWER BACK PAIN PATCHES

Topical analgesics, like those found in Tiger Balm Pain Relieving Hydrogel Patches (Large), can play a role in addressing musculoskeletal pain, like those affecting the lower back, and impact an individual’s quality of life.

Counterirritants, a category of analgesics that includes Capsaicin, Camphor, and Menthol, amongst others, play a crucial role in providing some form of relief from musculoskeletal pain. They work by stimulating and subsequently desensitizing pain-sensing neurons, reducing pain perception.

  • Menthol: Menthol, a key ingredient in many topical analgesics, helps manage pain by desensitizing pain receptors in the body. It activates specific receptors, inducing a cooling sensation and initially stimulating pain receptors before desensitizing them. This dual action contributes to its effectiveness in pain management. Menthol also functions as a vasodilator, further enhancing its possible pain-relieving capabilities. While the exact mechanisms of menthol-mediated vasodilation are still being studied, it is believed to relax blood vessels, although findings may vary based on factors like species or specific vascular beds.
  • Capsaicin: Another promising ingredient, capsaicin, is used in topical formulations for pain management. Low-concentration capsaicin formulations, when applied topically, have demonstrated moderate efficacy though necessitating regular application. Capsaicin operates within the skin to reduce hypersensitivity and address pain through a process termed ‘defunctionalization’ of pain-sensing nerve fibers. This process involves temporary loss of nerve cell membrane function, impaired transport of nerve growth factors leading to altered nerve behavior, and reversible retraction of nerve endings within the skin.
  • Camphor: Camphor, another well-known counterirritant, occurs naturally and is commonly used as a topical analgesic. Although the precise molecular mechanisms of camphor’s pain relief properties are not fully understood, the addition of fragrant essential oils, often combined with camphor, has been linked to central analgesic effects as well as enhanced sensory satisfaction.
